Consumed 12/14/08 at Karl Strauss Universal CityWalk, Universal City, CA.
Beer seems almost black until held to light; dark brown highlights appear. A thick foamy head somewhere between off-white and tan decorates this fluid.
Aroma of dark roasted malt, some vanilla.
Balanced, mild chocolate and coffee are the predominant flavors. Some vanilla. Slightly sweet. Sadly, I could not pick out the flavors of the actual maltballs used in the brewing.
Texture is smooth, slightly chewy.
Easy to drink, particularly considering the ABV, but nothing to get excited about.

I had this one on tap.
Poured a dark brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of roast, cocoa powder, and some dark fruits. Tastes of roast, lighter cocoa powder, chocolate, and dark fruits.
I really like malted milk balls, and I could kinda get that in this. By far a great Karl Strauss beer.
