What a way to celebrate a birthday! Aged in bourbon barrels, brewed to imperial strength and designed as a Baltic-styled Porter, Karl Strauss isn't messing around in their thirty-third year.
Barrel Aged 33rd Anniversary Ale pours with a rusty and barkish brown, sitting mysteriously with foggy and tarnish edges, the tawny accented ale leads with bold vanilla, whisky spice, coconut and caramel in an oaken scent backed with chocolate and coffee. Dark fruit, sherry and port decorate the scent while the first sip leads with molasses, brown sugar, toffee and caramel.
Remaining malty-sweet throughout, the middle palate saturates with those bourbon laced malt sugars while complexities of charred grape, blueberry, plum and blackberry add complexity, balance and intrigue. Whisky flavors of booze soaked char keeps the coffee and cocoa flavors sharp while more of a fudgy center carries the savory components of port wine and Madeira across a long and plush finish.
Full bodied, sweet and pleasantly chewy, the beer is chocked full of maturity, complexity and charm in a well-balanced and savory display of beer making and barrel aging. A long aftertaste of caramel malts, port-like flavor and coffee bitterness ensures that this party continues well after the sip is gone.
