Cypress Brewing Co. "Miigwetch"
1 pint can, coded "11/8/18..."
$3.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Well we're not off to a good start. Upon opening the can the beer foamed out onto the counter, and then while trying to pour it it brought up a massive head that took up 90% of the glass. On the up side, the head retention is excellent as thousands of tiny bubbles are racing from below to keep it going. The body is tangerine colored and it's quite hazy, on the verge of becoming cloudy. The head is a slightly off-white. In the nose it's fruity (kind of a generic fruitiness, but also mildly citrusy) and "hoppy". It's not bad but for being double dry-hopped I'd expect it to be a bit fuller. If the date on the bottom of the can is the canning date then it's only 3 months old, which reminds me that this was stored refrigerated at Roger Wilco, and then when I brought it home as well. It's a good thing that it was because without that the yeast may have fermented that residual fruit sugar and it could have exploded. OK, on to the flavor... the cranberry comes through, it's not strong but it's clear if you know it's there, and it lends a light bit of acidity to the beer. Beyond that there's some orange, and mild grapefruit, and a gently sweet malt base. I get some actual yeast flavor as well but it's not bad; I'd imagine that it might taste even better if it was filtered, or even just a bit clearer. It's a decent APA though, and the cranberry gives it a nice twist. It's got a firm bitterness to it, 35 to 40 IBUs, and it finishes dry in combination with the acidity from the cranberry. Looking back, the lacing is pretty decent. In the mouth it's medium bodied, and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled effervescent carbonation. Overall I enjoyed it and hope to try some fresh from the source at some point.
