This is the first beer I have sampled from this new 6-barrel farmhouse brewery located just south of Green Bay. According to the brewery website, the beers use only locally made Briess malts and hops from Puterbaugh Farms in Washington state. .
Presentation: a 22 oz bomber bottle with a primarily red and black label; a Viking longship with hops manning the barley oars cruises the center of the label. "Continental Pilsner" in a parchment scroll tops the label.
The beer pours a becoming copper body with a limited soft white head, very little lacing present.
The aroma is this pilsner's weak point. Malt and green apple smells dominate. Very little hop presence noted, or perhaps it is subsumed by the other aromas.
The taste is tipped in favor of the malt. Sweet at the fore but not overpowering, the beer finishes well with a very faint hop snap. Very nice and refreshing.
This beer has a very nice body, which makes it filling. I like the fact that it has a bit of weight behind it.
I really enjoyed this pilsner. For a small-scale craft brewery pilsners are difficult and risky to brew. This beer is a fine addition to the Wisconsin craft-brewing tradition.
