We love starting the year with an old school brew, and RANDOM RULES is definitely one of them! Following a road trip across the Nelson region of New Zealand back in 2011, the eponymous hop quickly became a favourite of our head brewer James. Nelson Sauvin is placed front and centre in this brew, punching hard with Citra, adding heaps of citrus and tropical fruits. We've also garnished it with a sprinkle of Enigma for a certain added extra that we can't quite place...but rather like.
Today, RANDOM RULES represents years of striving to select and secure incredible batches of Nelson Sauvin, recapturing all those flavour-packed feelings felt 14 years ago!
Malts: Extra Pale, Golden Promise, Dextrin, Oats, Wheat Malt, Flaked Wheat.
Hops: Simcoe, Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Enigma.

440ml can.
L: Opaque, orange colour with two fingers of lumpy head that collapses quickly to a smear with an arc of lacing.
S: Watermelon rind and lime zest. Green, powerful and long-lasting.
T: Peach, pineapple, lime, pine needles, forest floor.
F: Full body, rich and oily mouthfeel, powder dry, vaguely acidic finish.
O: A super dank, extra limey hazy NZIPA. Way more dank than typical Nelson Sauvin hopped beers. The normal vinous character is submerged below a heavy, earthy, cannabis blanket. Did enjoy it but not sure the bright and zippy Nelson Sauvin hop is fully revealed.

Frederiksberg 14/6 2023. 40 cl from tap at Tap 21, H. C. Ørstedsvej, Frb. C.
Pours opaque hazy yellow with a dirty streak. Mid-sized white head. Stable. Settles as uneven, creamy layer of foam stretching to cover the surface of the beer. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is medium intense with a light sweet odor of ripe Stone fruit mingling with s more prominent citric scent. Sweet peach. Grapefruit and lemon. A touch of petroleum. A little bit acerbic.
Medium strong carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, lively and tingling texture.
Flavor is medium intense with a light sweetness followed by a medium strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingers for a while. Finish is dry and tart.
Not particularly random. Seem to follow most rules for making a solid Indian Pale Ale.
