Glass: Ayinger willi glass
Steiner's dunkel lager is a somewhat strange mix of mild caramel and burnt toast scents and flavors with a somewhat unpleasant burnt dust or "earthy" component to the flavor that's difficult to describe. Fairly timid in all respects, this is not a version of the style I would return to.
Pours a 1.5cm tall mass of foam, made up of small to medium-sized bubbles, for a frothy appearance on bottom, soapy foam on top. Head decreases in less than one minute to a medium-sized ring around the perimeter of the glass and a large island of film-like foam atop the body. Lacing is minimal, a few dots cling to the walls of the glass. Body is a very dark amber brown color, with light bringing out chestnut brown hues. Carbonation visible through the transparent body, low in number and activity.
Aroma is minimal to nonexistent unless the glass is agitated harshly. The scents that do emerge are of heavily toasted and slightly burnt caramel with a bit of yeast. Not unappealing, but very limited for the style.
Taste is generally very minimal, similar to the aroma, with light sweetness from dark caramel, a bit of charred toast mixed with other flavors (burnt dust? "earth?"). Front of palate tastes mild sweetness with a bit of burnt caramel. Mid-palate of mild, but moderately unpleasant burnt dust, earthiness, and toast with a light background of caramel-like sweetness. Back of palate tastes modest dark caramel-like sweetness, hints of roasted malt, slight undesirable "earthiness." Aftertaste is very mild, of dark caramel-like sweetness and a bit of mellow charred toast.
Beer is medium-light in body, with carbonation of low intensity, resulting in a slightly foam (1/10) and otherwise smooth (9/10) mouthfeel. This comes across as a bit stagnant; a bit more carbonation would be appropriate and benefit the aromatics and mouthfeel. Closes dry, with moderate stickiness clinging to the palate.
