Surprised to see such a light beer: dark golden to lightly amber. Sheets of lace are produced by the thick off-white collar.
Nose has a tea-like mix of earthy and floral malt along with the barrel vanilla and a spirit-like alcohol note.
A little boozy, perhaps, but otherwise quite smooth. The alcohol sting is light and near the end. Before that a toffee malt, vanilla-infused, woody-to earthy undertoned beer takes shape. The lingering booze does build up a little over time and becomes a bit harder to deal with.
This has a general impression of a big DIPA that has lost its hop punch, aged in barrels. It’s not stale/oxidized, but does lack a little deepth or darkness that I’m more used to in a barleywine.
