Foeder Fermented Baltic Porter
Here’s the formula: a grizzly crime, a bleak location, a tortured protagonist, dour locals, and twists galore. Let’s set the scene…The crime: Foeder Baltic Porter? I mean, that’s more of a gem than a crime. Bleak locale? Well, it is Colfax, but don’t think we’d call it bleak. Tortured protagonist? Actually, our head brewer is a pretty delightful guy and doesn’t seem to be haunted by his past. Dour locals? Our regulars are what make this place great. Ok, maybe this isn’t a candidate for a brooding, Scandinavian police procedural. I mean, how brooding can you be when you taste like Toasted Marshmallow, Birch Beer, Oloroso Sherry and Tobacco Leaf?
Hops: Cashmere
Grist: pilsner, Munich, black malt, chocolate rye, crystal, oats, demerara sugar
Oak Type: American Oak Foeder

16oz can from Tavour. Black pour with a lasting cap of creamy beige head. Aroma is roasty with lots of chocolate (emphasis on "lots"). Taste is sweet, and chocolaty, roasty bitterness. Creamy feel, smooth, light bitterness lingers. Very, very enjoyable. ABV not that noticable.

This is exactly what an imperial porter should be. You get the heavy bourbon flavor from the barrel aging, but still get lots of the base beer underneath. It's smooth too, even at the elevated ABV, so you may not realize right away that you're in double digits. But that buzz hits you soon enough, and you keep wanting more. Nicely balanced for such a heavy beer, and it's a style that not too many breweries are making, so if you like porters as much as I do you're going to want to try this one.

Transparent dark brown body; one-finger thick, frothy khaki colored head. Huge aroma of cocoa powder and milk chocolate. The taste follows along with the smell attributes; medium to bold bitterness, some from the malt, some from the hops. Heavy body; relatively smooth overall; excellent residual sugar presence.
This is a rich and delightful Baltic porter, chock full of flavor, aroma, and feel.
Pouring temperature: 45 °F; canning info: no date; American oak foeder; experimental hop #06300

Had November 2019, on draft at Cerebral.
L - Dark as Satan's taint, not much head on the draft pour I had.
S - Roast, mallow, toffee-coffee, almost savory smell on the back. Interesting.
T - Giant explosion of Baltic Porter on 'roids - an Imperial version basically of a basic Baltic. Crushes the palate, but delicious coffee, roast, and burnt malt taste all around.
F - could have used a tad more carbonation to make it less decadent, a little more lively, but me likely.
O - a damn good Baltic - wish they would can THIS and send it down the Front Range.
