Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout collab with Great Notion
Whenever we get together with our kin from Great Notion, things tend to take an inevitable turn...there may be some initial talk of keeping it simple or making something subtle, but once all the self-deception melts away and the honesty starts to flow, we acknowledge what we’re all really there to do: fuck around with adjuncts. All we needed was a direction, so we threw darts at a wall covered in pictures of popular pastries and German Chocolate Cake won the day. So, this Stout was aged for 16 months in Laws Two Grain and Weller bourbon barrels before being conditioned on Coconut, Belizian Cocoa Nibs from Cultura, Madagascar Vanilla Beans and Toasted Pecans.
*Contains lactose

2020 Bottle, poured today - Not terribly dark on the pour, more a murky brown. Nose is bourbon and cake batter. No off notes in the flavor after this much time, though some of the sweetness is generic. You can taste the bourbon and barrel, but not to excessive amounts.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like vanilla icing, milk chocolate syrup, cake in general, bourbon, and coconut.
This is definitely pretty sweet, which isn't surprising, given the association with Great Notion and the idea to make a cake-like beer. In small doses, it works pretty well for me. I wish I got the pecan character - I mostly get a ton of vanilla and coconut, and sugar.
This is medium bodied, creamy, slightly syrupy, with no booze.
This was bound to be a bit absurd and decadent, but it does work in small amounts.
