Farmhouse Ale

Favreau. French diminutive from the Latin word Faber, meaning Blacksmith, a highly skilled artisan who forges objects from wrought iron or steel. With a slight hint of smokiness, this Bière de Garde celebrates the spirit of the blacksmith. The addition of apples celebrates the spirit of the farm. Our Nye Hill Farm “house ale,” celebrating the spirit of life forged in lasting friendship.

Also available in our Dry Hopped version for those who enjoy a slightly hoppier flavor.

From the 22oz bomber, undated. Served in a nonic.

Pours a mildly-hazed earthy gold with a boisterous three-plus fingers of fluffy head. Retention is good for several minutes before settling back to a dense cap with spotty lacing.

Smells of farmhouse yeast and lime, wet, bready malt, and spice.

Taste is rustic, earthy and substantial, following the nose, with some grassy herbs and apple peel, bubble gum, and juicy citrus tossed in, especially orange. Finishes with a little soft, musty, juicy bitterness.

Feel is slick and creamy, medium-plus bodied, and amply carbonated.

Overall, a solid, enjoyable, funky homestead ale. I served it with cranberry-glazed pork roast and spaetzle for Christmas dinner and it was perfect.

Orange hued gold color with light honey. Very active, rushing bubbles create a formidable sized white cap with staying power. Fluffy with decent lace.

Sweet and sour aroma, sweet honey malt with sour/grapes and green apples in the yeast. Very nice nose.

The flavor has a rich, sour apples and fruity tang edge with very crispy and sweet malt. The sour/funky yeast flavor is excellent being smoothed out by earthy/sour fruits. The malt is very crisp with a gentle sweetness and very subtle smoked cheese effect.. Very light and crisp bite, smooth and juicy finish.

The malt actually becomes more smokey as the liquid warms a bit. The sour apple and smoke gets more intense later on, making for a fairly complex ale. The hops seem to provide earthy and herbal undertones.

A very well executed version of this style.
