Search deeper into the gravity well of traditionalist barleywine with the further conditioned version of "Your Dungeon or Mine”.

The base was pulled early from the fermenter and introduced to an even higher gravity English yeast strain to promote a little additional flavor production- expect all the same notes but with more concentrated fruit, deeper flavor, better foam and subtle added dimension. Drink fresh or cellar. Cheers!

355 ml bottle poured into a tulip glass shows a crystal clear orangish amber body floating a 1+" head of cream colored mixed bubbles that lasts a bit until first sip. Settling to a wispy cap and thick edge hugging ring leaving random artistic lacing.

Aromas of toffee and biscuit with fruity notes of raisin and apricot fold nicely into the taste. Upfront the malt is soft, fruity, and welcoming, but the back end finishes with a not quite shellac bitterness that needs a moldy cheese to relax. The booze might have a hand in that, but it is not specifically alcohol burn.

Smooth mouthfeel, full and soft, save for the finish.

Overall a tasty beverage for enjoying a cheeseboard and a book.

Edit:
02/15/24 tasting from bottle obtained in 21 at release and refrigerated since.

Look is identical to the '22 review.
Aroma is a bit muted, but consistent.
The flavor has mellowed. Or, at least my perception of a strong bitterness, anyway. No such experience now. The taste itself is smooth, dried fruits and caramel. The closest I can come to where the bitterness went is, on exhale, there is a slight ethanol aroma. But again, 9.1%, so can't fault that.

Finish is drying, and I don't remember that sensation, but I appreciate it.
I'm not changing my score, but I would switch the smell and flavor scores and maybe notch up the overall for staying power.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Had 4/1/21.

Pours a fairly clear medium amber, with a one and a half inch head of creamy foam with decent retention and foamy lacing. Aromas of caramel, malt, grapes, yeast, light brown sugar. Flavors of grapes, malt, caramel, light brown sugar, some hop bitterness midway through the finish, a light sweetness. Smooth, a good medium body that’s a touch light for the style, well carbonated.

I have not had the original version that sells in four packs- this is sold by the bottle, but should for comparison. This is a little lighter and and little hoppy for the English style, but it’s nicely done. Maybe could use a touch more malt?
