Handpull/cask pour at the brewery. Cost $13.90 for what I was told be would be "a pint" but definitely isn't...odd for an English style ale house to get their volumes outright wrong.

7.8% ABV. Russian Imperial Stout.

Served in a stem-goblet...the first and only beer I've had served in a goblet in all of New Zealand.

Taste lacks richness and depth of flavour. Muted chocolate, malted milk balls, obvious dark malt sweetness. No dark fruit flavours or roast here...a bit underwhelming, but it does disguise its ABV alright.

Dry. Smooth. Not creamy or soft. A bit scratchy in fact. Low in carbonation. I think serving this from a cask has done it only harm.

Tastes like a wisp of a real Russian imperial stout...like how the milk foam in a flat white almost tastes like espresso. It's in proximity to the intended style, but certainly not quite there.

In any case, it's drinkable and I don't dislike it.

Very dark appearance with slight head and just the right amount of carbination. Mild coffee and chocolate aroma. Taste is also mild coffee and chocolate. This is one of the better New Zeland beers that I have found.

Format: 75mL taster at Beervana 2014, served by the brewers.

Appearance: pours out a pitch black with a limited head that is quite dark brown in colour. Good retention and lacing.

Aroma: a massive umami nose, with just a touch of roast malts in the background.

Taste: again those big umami flavours with roasted coffee and sweet chocolate. Easy-drinking.

Aftertaste: all of the flavours come through quite nicely, with a warming alcohol on the finish.

Mouth feel: quite full in body with a moderate carbonation the brings those big flavours through. Very smooth.

Overall: a decent Russian Imp - the umami really adds something different to the style.
