Clock Out Stout pours with some vengeance on its mind. It's black and even though it's low on the alcohol scale, it has that chug-a-lug. It looks black as night on the pour but when in better light there are blood red highlights running the edges of the glass. The khaki foam grows to a finger+ in height, soapy, and fades fairly quickly to a skim and chunky ring. Sticky lacing cling to the glass in valleys & peaks.
The nose on this beer has a lot going on and most seems to come from the barrel aging, though there is a stout tucked in there. It's a little bourbon boozy upfront but that quickly segues into rich pecan, vanilla, and oak. The bourbon aspect brings that boozy caramel quality that's actually making my mouth water. Deep pulls bring forward a moderate roast. light coffee notes, and a hazelnut quality that's totally appropriate. Making me thirsty.
Unfortunately, the flavor profile falls a little short of the smell. The roast is mellow but certainly noticeable, while the caramel maltiness takes the floor backed by the bourbon caramel notes. Coffee notes are soft and complimentary. The barrel aging adds a nice depth with the pecan forward profile and a whisper of vanilla. The flavor seems to be dumbed down from what the nose led me to believe. It's good though.
One of the things I've nearly always noticed on lower abv stouts aged in barrels is that they don't seen to quite carry the weight needed to pull it off. It's always a little thinner than I'd like, which is the case here. Moderate body with a fairly lax carbonation. The finish dries up rather quickly and I can get behind that aspect.
Clock Out Stout is a good beer and I would probably buy it again. It's weird, and pleasing, seeing a $8 barrel aged bomber these days. The nose is where it's at on this beer, unfortunately, the flavor doesn't quite live up to it. Worth a shot for sure.
