DATE: May 9, 2020... OCCASION: watching Sonic the Hedgehog with the family... GLASSWARE: Affligem chalice... pours from a day-old grunt a intimidating, dark brown body that is clear and placid... approximates tea in its appearance... grape, raisin, hay, tart sugar, mint, apple, pear, honey and oat--a complex combination in each breath... dank yeasts too that suggest a heavier ABV and a rich, wine-like experience... this is a lethal sipper, dry at the finish, yet lively and full in the mouth... leathery, thick, and textured as a beer befitting a four-year celebration... warms without excessive bitterness or sweetness--its fruitiness is refreshing, with apple, pear, berry, fig, honey, traces of citrus, and thyme...strong caramel notes too, though its malt is balanced by its dryness-mostly yeasty dough...that ringing finish of grape, raisin and yeast makes this an endearing beer, big, bold and subtle as a quad should be... it's great to know the brewery is still up and running during this time of quarantine, and they continue to create products worth seeking out... this is among my favorites of theirs, and it holds its own with many of the other quads I have had...
