The text at the bottom of the can is a bit smudged at the beginning, but the end reads: "12-20-23"

Appearance: It is a black-bodied beer with a very dark brown head. The head is short and very fizzy. The head doesn't last long, fading out to a glass surface on the the top of the beer without any remaining bubbles. No lacing at all.

Aroma: There is a light aroma of dark chocolate and a hint of cocoa powder. The aroma is very subtle and the nose has to get very close to the beer to pick anything up, but what exists is nice enough.

Taste: Up front there is a bit of a chocolate liqueur with a light bit of campfire flavor. The middle of the palate has a bit of a weird sweet and tangy malt character which is a bit odd. It has a light smokey flavor in the middle. There is some very mellow smoke character towards the back of the palate and a slightly sweet malt flavor that lingers for a bit. After a while the beer develops a bit of chocolate on the palate if you don't use a palate cleanser.

Mouthfeel: It is medium-bodied but it trends a bit on the lower edge of medium. There is a mellow bitterness which comes across as a lightly roasted coffee bean. There is a bit of heat to the beer which is nice because it provides the greatest character to an otherwise uninteresting beer. The awkward sweetness hampers drinkability, but thankfully there is some heat in the aftertaste to clean things up. It might sound weird but the beer feels better after you have had a sip rather than while you are drinking it.

Overall: The beer as a whole is pretty boring and it isn't made very well. The label states that this is an "Imperial Smoked Porter" but it barely has any smoke to it. There is far too much sweetness to this beer, to the point where it just becomes awkward to drink. The chocolate character from the Porter base beer is pretty nice, but it still feels like the sweetness of the beer overpowers everything else. The label states that this is "Conditioned with chilies" and the brewery did a good job with this. The heat from the beer is very nice but everything surrounding it just feels disjointed.

As a whole I don't recommend it and I wouldn't buy it again. I would try another chili beer from this brewery though.
