Deep, dark brown. Light passes midway between the edge and center. Lasting head. It formed a done before settling to a thin layer of bubbles. Streaks and rings for lace.
Freshly milled barley malt is the initial nose. I am reminded of the bags of malt before they are mixed with water to make a wort.
Darker malt flavor, like a heavily toasted bread. Not quite burnt, but awfully close. Dry. Interesting because it is so astringent, leaving a very long lip smacking aftertaste. Body leans rich and the carbonation leans high. The finish is bitter but the hop presence is subtle and ever present. I like the complexity even if this beer isn't in my wheelhouse of taste.
