The bottle has green wax covering the top. I don't see a bottle date.
Appearance: The beer is a black with some dark brown around the edges where light strikes it. It has a short creamy textured head with pock-marks over the surface. The head is a light tobacco stained tan. Good head retention and lacing.
Aroma: There is a bit of charcoal wood and sour cherry aroma to the beer. It has a touch of bakers chocolate that only shows up every now and then, but is mostly present on the first scent. It has a bit of a cordial cherry aroma.
Taste: There is a tartness to the beer which strikes the palate right at the same time that a bitter carbon flavor hits it as well. The flavors don't quite go together and that tartness morphs into a sour milk flavor. The aftertaste is really impressive though; it has this distinct chocolate cocoa flavor which tastes like a real piece of chocolate, and the sourness is cleaned right off the palate. There is also a bit of a lemon flavor that lingers on the palate long after the chocolate is gone.
Mouthfeel: The body feels light for the flavor profile. Carbonation is good. It is a clean beer and easy to drink.
Overall: This beer is a bit of an oddball because it clearly tastes like a Gose but it is also a very dark beer and it tastes like chocolate. From the label, this is made from "Dark wheat malt, chocolate malt, experimental hops, and orange rind." There didn't seem to be any orange flavor to the beer but they really seemed to nail it with the chocolate malt, as it delivers a lot of chocolate flavor. This beer feels very experimental and crazy, so I would recommend it to people who want something a little strange and aren't afraid to step out of their comfort zones. To traditional Gose enthusiasts or orange lovers, I would say it might be worth a try but don't expect a ton of character. The beer does take on an odd souring character to the middle but it is very fleeting and it is quickly replaced by chocolate flavor which makes up for it. I was interesting and worth trying.
