Had Vadose Zone at Hutton & Smith Taproom, Chattanooga, on draft into almost tulip.
Pours absolutely black with creamy light-tan head, and great retention, leaving a coating of concentric rings of Belgian lace down the glass. Aromas of a little dark fruit and mild roast malts off pour, which carry into a little herbal hop aroma. On tasting, begins mild, dark malt and sweet vanilla, joined by moderate roast malts, which carry into a mostly-neutral, slightly-spicy, Nobly-hopped, nicely-bitter finish.
All vanilla up front, but it settles into a very solid, balanced, sweet but roasty stout.
