Henry’s Wheat Ale is like no other wheat ale in the central PA area. Most wheat ale tend to be dry and have a yeasty taste. Although, this American styled wheat ale has a malt forward sweetness, and splash of hops to balance the flavor out. Henry’s Wheat Ale will grab your attention with every taste, and have you anticipating the next sip as the flavors do not linger. This untypical wheat ale can start one’s love affair with craft beer or make those who are more experienced enjoy a flavorful and easy drinking wheat ale. With this flavor comes a darker than normal wheat ale, but don’t be scared it will not disappoint.* I have been told this wheat closely resembles a weizenboch.

This next horizontal as part of the eradication of The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is going to be fun, if nothing else. I first met co-owner & brewer Greg Schertzer at the Annual Capital City Invitational Beer Festival, held at Appalachian B.C. in Harrisburg several years ago & continuing. He seemed to be a passionate sort, but I wondered as to his sustainability. I no longer doubt in his longevity & he even came to The FGBS recently for a tasting of his wares. Howling Henry is his beagle, who sits in on every brew day & howls. Ha!
From the bottle: "Crafting Beer Without Rules".
I made sure to agitate the beer while still in the bottle before Pop!ping the cap. After all, it is an "American Pale Wheat Ale" & some cloudiness is to be expected. Boy, did the head come up quickly on the pour! I wound up with just under three fingers of dense, foamy, deep-tan/light-brown head with moderate retention. Color was a cloudy Brown to Dark Brown (SRM = > 22, < 27), but closer to 27. Hmm. Not "Pale", sorry. Nose had a caramelized malty sweetness, almost candy-like in its intensity. Hmmm. Mouthfeel was medium, which is about right. The taste was very sweet and malty, loads of caramel flavor, but no wheat-like sharpness nor any hoppy bitterness, both of which were depicted on the label. At least Henry was kind enough not to mark his territory. Finish was still pretty sweet, which is not what I am looking for in the style. Hey, I get the whole "Crafting Beer Without Rules" bit, but when I have to sit down and consider the beer for a review, the rules need to apply. There was nothing intrinsically wrong with the beer itself, but for its style, it was completely out-of-whack.

Too dark for a wheat....if this was supposed to be an American Wheat - it definitely was not. It reminded me more of a dunkel weisse (dark wheat - but not german style).
Look - too dark...should only be pilsen and wheat; seems there was caramel malt in it of 40 or 60 L
Smell - had a wheat smell but almost tart like but not like a Berliner weisse or a but something definitely off.
Taste - not as clean and wheat tasting as it should be. American Wheats are clean, crisp tasting with higher alcohol and hoppy taste...it had the alcohol taste but not a good representation of an American Wheat
Feel - should have tasted more clean and crisp....but lacking

Served on draft at a local restaurant in a pint glass.
No head, but carbonation seemed fine. Cloudy as expected.
Had a bit of spice, but I thought it was balanced. The esters reminded me of some Belgian ales.
I'm not sure if the ABV is accurate (it came from the restaurant menu, not the brewer's website). It might not be a good representation of the Wheat beer style, but very drinkable and recommended.
