Are you into experiencing a new take on an IPA? Then this strong, hopped up oat ale should be on your list. This ale deceivingly starts out with a malty sweetness, and a silky mouth feel that goes till the end, but be prepared for the hop flavors to overwhelm your palate…and make you howl.

Henry and I wanted to balance out the hop bill with addition of extra malts and oats, instead of having a palette wrecking IPA. We designed the malt bill to deliver an unexpected malt forward sweetness and the oats to help smooth out the finish.* Please be responsible when consuming!

This next horizontal as part of the eradication of The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is going to be fun, if nothing else. I first met co-owner & brewer Greg Schertzer at the Annual Capital City Invitational Beer Festival, held at Appalachian B.C. in Harrisburg several years ago & continuing. He seemed to be a passionate sort, but I wondered as to his sustainability. I no longer doubt in his longevity & he even came to The FGBS recently for a tasting of his wares. Howling Henry is his beagle, who sits in on every brew day & howls. Ha!

From the bottle: "Crafting Beer Without Rules".

Howlin' Henry must be feeling his oats at last as he made nary a peep while I Pop!ped the cap on this one. However, he did watch me with his private eyes. A gentle pour, an in-glass swirl to raise two fingers of soapy, foamy, tawny head with decent retention & we were off & running. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was both biscuity & slightly minty, making me wonder what I was in for. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but not much beyond it. The taste had an anise-mint coolness, but I could not really put my finger on it. It was not bad, certainly not infected, but neither was it what I expect from an AIPA. I know that the Notes say that he was going for something other than a palate-wrecker, but this is kind of out-of-bounds for the style. Finish was dry, still giving me an anise-minty flavor. It was not bad, but in terms of the style, I would be deeply disappointed in this as an AIPA.

Really thin, under carbed. Not hop forward, almost sour aftertaste. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle.

There is a bit of a hop aroma, but little else in this IPA.

There was a touch of a biscut, malty note - but not the hop-forward taste follow-through. This was poured from a bottle and I got the sense it was flat. Very little carbonation and no lacing on the glass. One of my guests thought there might also be a medicinal note (i.e. band-aid). I couldn't pick that up.

Had a bottle of this and something was out of place - it did not taste like an IPA...no hop aroma, no hop flavor or bitterness. It actually had plum and raisin taste to it like a Belgian dubble. I don't know if it was infected or not but it didn't taste like an IPA or even a AIPA.

Look - darker than typical IPA
Smell - No hop aroma at all
Taste - No hop bitterness or flavor
Feel - decent but not IPA like
