Black Bear is our first ever barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout. This beer was brewed in January 2017 and spent 12 months maturing in Jim Beam bourbon barrels. The result is a smooth, complex, and luscious beer that clocks-in at just under 10% ABV. Highly drinkable now, but also perfect for cellar-aging – we can’t wait to see how the flavors of this RIS evolve over time!

Great North just put a bit more of this on tap, from 2018! Swung by yesterday to have a couple of 10oz pours ($7 each)...
The small sniftah held an oily, dense, jet black libation, with a creamy, mocha/tan head. The foam was thin but covered all, with most at the edges. Had nice lacing, as well. Aroma had choco, bourbon, some caramel, and cocoa. It was medium to medium-plus in body, and rather smooth, though I felt it could have been heftier.
Taste had more caramel and roasty notes, dark choco, some dark fruit (raisins and currants) and a smidge of vanilla. The bourbon was present but not overpowering, and lingered in the finish. Very nice! Cheers!!

Can from the Brewery
Inky black color with a decent sized frothy tan head that slowly recedes. Rich roast chocolate and caramel with bits of dark dried fruit. Faint oaky bourbon with some light coconut and a hint of green apple. Quite a decent sipper.

Canned 1/24/18. Enjoyed 3/17/18
Nice dark black pour with a khaki head on top that settles to a ring around the edges. Aromas of cocoa, dark fruits and light roast coffee. The feel is soft yet is full and coats well. The flavor is of the coffee and more chocolate but there is a port wine like taste that screams sweet flavored grapes! Definitely one of the more sweet RIS I have had, but I enjoy sweet beers. All in all, this is a wonderful beer that I'm glad I picked up a 4-pack. Really well done and enjoy!!
