Canned 11/12/20

After frequently passing up on regular RVP every time I see it, I was intrigued by this barrel aged variant. It’s always nice to see rum barrel beers as well, so I’m excited for this one

Pours a very dark brown with 2 fingers of tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing

The nose brings notes of sweet and spicy rum, caramel, sweet vanilla, roasted malt, milk chocolate, and a touch of coffee

The taste starts off with notes of rich caramel, dark chocolate, and coffee. The swallow is much more interesting here, bringing notes of dark fruit, smooth oak, vanilla, sweet rum, and light earthy hops

A medium body pairs with very gentle and smooth carbonation for a silky yet light drinking experience. Finishes mostly dry with a nice balance

This one was impressive. A pretty light porter all things considered, but still very flavorful. I’d get it again

Very good oak aged porter. Look is very dark almost jet black. couldn't bring myself to give look 5/5 because the head sucked. Went right away like a bud light or mick ultra. But the smell and flavors were incredible. Notes of Carmel and spices on the nose, and then very deep malty flavors on the taste.

I've never been a particular Porter enthusiast but this purple can stood out on the shelf of my favorite Craft Beer Cellar. When I discovered it was a product from Great North Aleworks I definitely decided to give it a try as I've been impressed by the products from that local NH brewery that I've previously enjoyed. The taste and body were quite different from what I expected of a run-of-the mill Porter perhaps because of the oak-aging. The 6.6% ABV seemed just about perfect without dominating the taste. Glad I was seduced by the purple can and my prior experience with Great North - this turned out to be the only Porter that I would (and will) repurchase this year.

16 oz can into a tulip glass.

Pours a dark cola brown color with 2 fingers of fluffy khaki head. The head leaves plenty of sticky cobweb lacing as it settles into a thin sheet. Pretty good retention. Great looking porter.

The aroma brings notes of caramel, vanilla, roasted malts and coffee, followed by a fair amount of dark fruits and oak chips.

The flavor has notes of roasted malts, dark roast coffee, caramel and dark chocolate. There's also good amount of sweet vanilla and rum flavors. Has a nice, hoppy finish.

The feel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Goes down smooth with a bone dry finish.

Overall, this is a great robust porter. It's aged on "Rum Oak Cubes" and brings plenty of rum flavors without overpowering the beer. It's roasted, sweet, hoppy, and balanced.
