Phil Nerboso of Norfolk, MA won brewer of the year at the 2017 New England Regional Homebrew Competition. To celebrate his achievement, Phil joined us to brew one of his favorite beers, an English Style Barleywine.

After two years Cave Bear emerges. We aged the original brew in Bourbon barrels, then blended it with a fresh batch of Barleywine to create a rich, bright, and complex example of the style. Join us in raising a glass to Phil and homebrewers everywhere.

Can from the Packie.
Hazy dark brown in color with a decent sized off white head with moderate retention. Rich toffee and caramel with bits of prune raisin and dried cherries. Earthy hops to counter, oak tannin and a solid shot of warming alcohol. Great sipper!

From the 16 oz. can dated 01/15/21. Sampled Feb 13, 2021.

The color is a handsome amber brown with red hues and a tan head that slowly fades.

Intensive aroma of caramel malts, vanilla,, chocolate, dark fruit, and a low to no floral hop profile. A little bit of wood but the booze does not jump out.

Medium to full mouthfeel and smooth.

Big sweet caramel malt taste with a lingering warming finish. Same vanilla and wood aspects. Clears out the senses for sure. Just a lovely rendition of the style.

Game 2 of this Cave Bear double-header. The nightcap features the barrel-aged version. Got a 4-pack at Great North recently for $18.00.

Pours a deep, dark mahogany, almost with some haze to it. A lot darker than the original. Cannot determine the carbo sitch, but the head is a fine, thin creamy layer of light beige foam. Lacing is wispy and light. Bourbon jumps out at you big-time on this one! Still has caramel, toffee and brown bread, but the barrel is right up front! Body is medium-plus and satiny smooth. Minimal prickle and good heft!

Flavor has brown sugar, toffee, caramel, brown bread and some vanilla. And, yes, some bourbon action! Whereas the original had a healthy amount of malty sweetness, here the bourbon is the big player on the field. The finish has some subtle earthy hopping, too. Not sure which I like better, though the original is slightly higher rated due to a lovely color. Can't go wrong with either, really.... Cheers!!
