DATE: May 12, 2018... OCCASION: having celebrated Joe's First Holy Communion, we are enjoying The Greatest Showman... GLASSWARE: Konig pilsner... pours from a growler a slight off-white head that simmers swiftly to a flatline... the body is solid amber with little carbonation...first scent is immense bacon, sharp caramel, toasted bread, light spices like allspice and cardamon... in short, a promise of some real rauch.... more effervescent than it looks, with enough flourish at its end... flat enough through the mouth to allow swift sips, and 6.3% ABV, a medium-bodied experience... mellow caramel balances a rather audacious bacon and spiciness... the sweetness of maple adds a dimension to this nice spring beer, with enough sweetness to add complexity beyond the smoke...apple and pear are in here as well... a solid, reasonable rauchbier that doesn't push any extremity but stands well on its own...
