Czig Meister Brewing Co. "Deep Sea Series: Hydrozoan"
16 fl. oz. can "CANNED ON 03/18/22 10:5:53" and sampled on 09/04/22
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: The Hydrozoan is golden in color beneath a short head of slightly off-white foam. The aroma is citrusy and resinous or "dank" with some background notes of berry and some grainy and sweetish malt. The taste follows with notes of tangerine, lots of red berries, gooseberry, more hop resins, nectarine, apple... passionfruit... melon... and some floral and spicy character in the finish. It's very interesting. Upon smelling it I thought it was probably Citra because of the citrus and resin, and Mosaic because of the berry, but the berry in the flavor is much different than I usually find. The gooseberry is also a lot like what you find in Nelson Sauvin so I'm guessing there's some of that in there. Whatever blend of hops they've come up with it's a keeper! Along with those "dank" resins the hops have left behind some hop bite that combines with the moderate bitterness that's there to bring it in dry. The aforementioned floral character and some woody spiciness lingers with hop resin that suggests pine, and that's a nice contrast to the fruitiness that you get prior, lending it a good deal of complexity. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the lighter end and gently bristling due to the "hop bite". The head held up fairly well but not great, and the lacing is really just average although I am thinking that perhaps this glass isn't exactly "beer clean" so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. All in all I'm really impressed with this, and if Czig Meister can keep putting out NEIPAs of this caliber they'll become quite the contender.
