This imperial dark lager is brewed with cacao nibs and then lagered on Madagascar vanilla beans.

Bought locally, canned November 9th, as per the sticker on the 6pack.

It pours a dark brown with a finger of tan foam, good head retention and very good lacing.

The smell is chocolate, cinnamon, big vanilla, hints of lactose.

The taste is delicious chocolate and vanilla, caramel, a little bit roasty, no cinnamon that I thought I detected in the smell. Perhaps some toffee here as well.

Good mouthfeel, I really like this.

Zap summed it up succinctly. Good beer if you don't think of it as a dunkel

I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to German beer styles and a dunkel with cocoa nibs and aged on vanilla beans doesn't excite me much. Guess I've never seen a double dunkel but when I think of a dunkel I think of the traditional german lager and this is not that.

BUT, if you forget this is being considered a dunkel and just consider it a beer it is quite enjoyable. The vanilla adds a nice touch as does the cocoa...Upper side of medium bodied...creamy and smooth drinking...not hints of alcohol...not cloying or overdone with the cocoa and vanilla....just adds a light highlight to it. I like the beer. Roasty like a porter...

Going to rate it as a beer not a dunkel.

Deep, dark brown body, clear; thick head; light tan color; rich and foamy. Sweet, alluring nose; bold and pleasant mix of vanilla and cocoa. The taste reinforces the vanilla and cocoa notes; full sweetness; mild booziness. Heavy body; smooth and silky; slippery residual sugars.

Generally a good beer although a bit overpowering with the sweet flavors.

Pouring temperature: 55 °F; canning info: nothing noted

Had nice smells of oak and chocolate. Good initial taste, but the bitterness is more than I care for. I might finish half of this before I pour it out.

Poured from a 12oz can, I didn't realize this was a vanilla and cocoa beer but here we go.

On the pour a light brown one finger head forms on a relatively rough pour. No light passes through. Head fades fast to a thin cap and ring.

Aroma is quite interesting it's like a milk stout and Dunkel got together. Sweet roasty chocolate and coffee notes with a solid German lager character as well. Not too sweet as the yeast balances it out.

Flavor comes closer to a stout with sweet roasty malts and the cocoa coming through at the front with a nice hit of roasty bitterness that fades as the flavor progresses. Some hops are detectable, but it isn't a hoppy beer like some imperial stouts. The flavor fades to a crisp dark malty lager flavor without too much residual sweetness. The cocoa does linger a bit but it goes well with the malt bill and it has a raw cocoa flavor.

Feel is quite balanced but with a decent bit out co2 bite. Not super thick but sticks around long enough. Has the characteristics of a good lager despite the high abv.

Overall a pleasant surprise. I didn't expect to see that it was brewed with vanilla and cocoa but in this it works. It's certainly not a full blown pastry beer and everything works quite well together. Most of the sweetness is malty but it finishes dry.

Really dark brown, with no light transmission. Medium tan head. Moderate levels of caramel, and dark toffee, with medium dark roasted malt and a tiny whiff of molasses, to the smell. Light levels of dark candied malt, touch of molasses and some dark roasted grain in the background, but there in the finish.

Darker than expected, but there's chocolate malt in there. Dunkel isn't usually my jam, but with the chocolate and vanilla, this expressed a lot like a porter.

Pours a dark brown-black with two fingers of khaki foam. Head retention is great. Aroma is toasty, nutty, bready, caramely malts. Light with a swig of dark. Flavor profile is earthy, bready, toasty, nutty malts. Semi-sweet with some late bitter malts. Mouth feel is semi-creamy with a moderate softness. Overall, creamy with some heart malts. A winner for American Dunkels.

Draft.

My bestie from Charlotte NC gave me a can of this beer that he got from a beer of the month club pack. It poured an opaque dark with no head and no lace. The scent had dark roast malt notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with roast and dark chocolate presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer!

This is so reminiscent of stout or porter because of the added flavors but its a light feel and it still works well here. I definitely enjoyed this, a solid first impression from Wibby

A: Deep dark burnt red. Clear enough to allow light to pass
S: Roasty and sweet. Subdued nose
T: What you would expect from a heftier dunkel, but with a boosted sweetness from the vanilla. Bittersweet chocolate is brought to the forefront and kept in check by the roasted character. Smooth and not overwhelming
MF: Fair carbonation and an obvious lagery clean feel.
Overall: A nice and fairly unique beer. Reminiscent of a sweet porter/stout while staying firmly in the lager category.

On tap at the Denver airport after Beaver Creek skiing. Pours coffee brown. Smells like burnt brown sugar. Tastes like a doppel boch but smokier. You can't taste the higher alcohol.
