a stronger version of their moondoor dunkel, aged in rum barrels, and in this instance with coffee, vanilla, and cocoa nibs, its delicious on tap, an uncommon desserty adjunct version of a traditional style, and very drinkable for what it is. we never see these kinds of extras in a style like this, so more than anything i appreciate this for doing something different. the vanilla is nice with the rum, and easily the most robust of the additives in aroma and in flavor, its sweet and natural, brings up some cool dried fruit notes in the malt, raisins and dates mostly, and adds just a bit of richness to this. the rum isnt heavy here, but with the vanilla its obvious. the cocoa adds a little bitterness which is needed, but is pretty reserved here, while the coffee seems more of an aromatic element than a flavor one, although there is some darker roast than i remember getting from the grain alone in the base beer. subtle hints of grill and soy to me, some residual sugar, a prune juice note, very autumnal, and still with its german lager identity well enough preserved underneath all of this. could use a little more carbonation, but i like it not being way high alcohol for something barrel aged, and have to give these guys a lot of credit for a well crafted and very original brew here. i would love to try some of the other barrel aged variants!
