APPEARANCE: A very aggressive pour resulted in about an eighth of an inch of light brown head. It was about 50% large bubbles and 50% foam. What little head there was faded quickly. In terms of color, this thing is dark. An iPhone flashlight only got through with a touch of red light around the edges. Otherwise this thing was like a black hole.
SMELL: A touch of brown sugar provides a bit of balance to the big, roasty, bitter, back coffee aromas. The smell is intense, inviting, and good.
TASTE: Luscious is a word that comes to mind. It’s coffee with sugar and cream, but it also has a gorgeous almond flavor to it (so maybe skip the cream and call it almond milk?). Semi-sweet chocolate also works it’s way into the mix. This is just a lovely blend of flavor.
MOUTHFEEL: I hate when people drink something and say it’s smooth, but the best possible word for this happens to be ‘smooth’. It is velvety and slick, and just goes down incredibly easy for the large amount of body this thing has. Just enough sparkle to let your palate know it’s beer, but there is just zero resistance to it. Even a sweet soda isn’t this easy to drink. There is plenty of bitterness, but if you’re not looking for it, the semi-sweet backbone might fool you.
OVERALL: Outstanding beer. The oddly shaped, 16-oz. bottle is cool, but off-brand to some degree for a smaller brand that’s really developed an identity with their cans. Never would have guessed this is a 10% beer either. If I were to blindly guess, I would say 7.5-8%. This is my fourth experience with this beer, and so far, it’s the best one I’ve had. That could have something to do with the fact that I’m focusing on it, uninterrupted…and have some outstanding music to pair with it.
