Rusty Rail Brewing Company "Wolf King Warrior"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED 111918" and sampled on 031919
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is a coffee beer? I had no idea. I'm not sure I've ever had a coffee imperial stout. OK, so, it's poured a typical stout appearance with a black body beneath a frothy head of densely creamy tan. The aroma displays some coffee but it's not that bold. It is roasty however. It's nice. It smells like a cup of black coffee at the local diner. Moving on to the flavor... the coffee is brighter and tastes more like fresh, oily coffee beans. That's wrapped in malty sweetness, and there's a pleasant nuttiness to it as well as milk chocolate. A firm bitterness runs through it, anchoring it all along the way, and then leaving it dry and roasty in the finish. In the mouth it's medium-full in body and bristling on the palate with tiny effervescent bubbles. Looking back, the head has held quite well and I still have a solid creamy cap that's maybe an eight of an inch thick. The lacing is quite good as well, earning it 4.25 out of 5. Overall this is a really nicely balanced and well brewed coffee stout. I'll have to look for more of this.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/21/2018. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big nutty dark roasted coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, herbal, wood, tobacco, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big nutty dark roasted coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toasted oats, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, herbal, wood, tobacco, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, herbal, woody, peppery hop; and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, toasted oats, dark/brown bread, light smoke/char/dark fruit, herbal, wood, tobacco, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and minimal acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready/grainy, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.2%. Overall this is an awesome imperial coffee stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Very rich/well rounded imperial stout malt complexity with balanced fruity/nutty coffee; and nice earthy hop balance against sweetness. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Straight from (undated) bottle. Initial impression is light coffee, a hint of chocolate, roasty malts, and maybe a touch of vanilla. Mouthfeel is thin, thin, thin for the style. Finish is ever so slightly sweet.
Shall we say I was underwhelmed by this and leave it at that? Yes, let's.

From the 12 oz bottle via Growler Stop in a snifter. This decent imperial pours
a deep blackish brown with dark cola highlights and a very nice head of khaki
foam that settles to a thick ring, thin subtle layer, and shows some very nice lacing.
Nose of coffee, slight char, cola, and a touch of chocolate. Flavors lightly exceed the
nose with a hint of vanilla whisked about a stout cup of coffee that is char touched
with a touch of marshmallow and moderately bitter bakers cocoa. Decent mouth feel;
medium carbonation is lively---almost too much, medium body, and a nice heavy roasted
finish.

Overall, a solid imperial bit nothing that stands out from the crowd.

Cheers

Bottled on 9/26/17. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a big rocky khaki head that sticks around leaving great thick retention and nice lacing. The aromas are pretty mild and subtle. Lots of malts. Subtle hints of vanilla and coffee. The flavors are bolder than the aromas. Some chocolate syrup, vanilla and coffee in the mix. Some roasted characteristics. Mild bitterness with a mild sweetness. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's slightly thin. It's smooth and pretty easy to drink.

This is an alright imperial stout. It's nothing crazy, but it's not that bad. The coffee accentuates everything without dominating. Everything opens up a bit as it starts to warm.
