In 1810, to commemorate his wedding, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria organized a horse race for all of his subjects. The five-day event gave birth to the German tradition of Oktoberfest and, eventually, the American tradition of brewing sweet German lagers for fall. Well, this is not (underlined for emphasis) an Oktoberfest. We chose to boldly defy tradition with a seasonal beer that puts a twist on German ingredients. Join us as we break away from the pack and run our own race!

Good and lasting, creamy, off-white head. Medium dark orange, with some amber and caramel highlights, to the look. Faint, caramel malt, with a trace of mace in the aroma. Moderate, roasted rye, with a little bite and hardly any orange, except for the hops giving it an orange peel bite.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. This falls release.
Looks good in the glass. Clear reddish auburn body. Small white head persists in some form throughout most of the drink. Only a little lacing though.
Clean, but nondescript aroma. If I try hard, there might be a touch of rye.
On tasting, well, the overall taste is good, and very clean. But I'm not getting any blood orange at all, and the rye is a very light touch. Would have preferred a bit more from each.
Mouth medium, finish clean.
Overall, I'm no great fan of pumpkin or marzens, and thought this mix of flavors would appeal to me. But it's just too mild. Very easy drinking though.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, malts, a touch of oranges. Taste is a combination of oranges, rye, and malts, none of which assert any dominance over the others. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall it's not bad, but nothing special.

Pours a nice deep amber with a cream colored head.
Spicy rye citrus orange and nutty malt in the nose.
A robust chewy nutty malt with some bitter herb hop notes flows to a blood orange finish that leans a little sour.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip
L: Clear amber/copper pour with 2 fingers of fluffy white head. Nice sticky lacing.
S: Rye/grains and light citrus.
T/F: Toasted malts/grains. Bitter rye and earthy hops. Blood orange is in the background... present but not obnoxious. Medium to light bodied... a little medicinal. More rye at the finish.
O: A decent beer... I like the rye take on an Oktoberfest, and not nearly as sweet as most of the fall seasonals. One I'd drink again.

Well it was a fail as soon as I read it. Thought it was a Marzen with Blood Orange but a Rye ale was not as intended. Smell is faint with some orange sour smell. Taste is pretty much light rye but some sour orange flavor. Drink ability is pretty good a bit metallic and hard to chug but... yeah.
Overall a Marzen it is not but a crappy rye ale with some mild orange flavors it is.
DO NOT BE FOOLED!

I really try to refrain from being the BeerAdvocate police, but there are times that my patience is tried to the breaking point. I had recently procured this at Mari's 6-Pac & Mor in Reading & I was intrigued by the rampant, snorting horse on the label, so I took a moment to read what it (the label) had to say. I was as furious as the horse when I did so! The add did not include a picture & it had precisely the wrong style, causing philbe311 to not enjoy it. I submitted two updates (Style & Notes) as well as a picture, which I have never had to do outside of adding it myself. Please take note that it is NOT intended to be an Oktoberfest when rating/reviewing this beer!
From the bottle: "In 1810, to commemorate his wedding, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria organized a horse race for all of his subjects. A Pop! of the cap and I was off and running with a heavy-handed pour. I got three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, foamy, light-tan head with good retention that began to produce sticky lacing as soon as it began to slowly fall. Color was a beautiful Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had an earthiness, more malty than anything else & I felt like it was missing the prevalence of its two primary ingredients: rye malt & blood orange. It was definitely an inauspicious start. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was interesting, very earthy, not really sweet, with a subtle fruity bitterness that I would not have identified as blood orange on my own. Finish had a light pepperiness from the rye, but the prevalent taste was that earthy maltiness. I applaud them for refraining from making an Oktoberfest, but this needed better execution, especially as a Rye Ale.

L - A mammoth frothing effervescent khaki colored head comprised of big chunky bubbles reminiscent of a root beer float... Rock star retention... The color is a deep rusty copper... A moderate of bit of micro bubbled very rapid carbonation that swirls throughout...
S - Malt forward... Cereal grains... Toffee... A hint of the blood orange addition on the nose...
T - Very limited flavor... Some bready malts and similar to the nose just the slightest hint of the blood orange... Slightly metallic and medicinal...
F - Medium bodied... Somewhat dense... Limited carbonation... Slightly sharp and intense finish...
O - Not sure if this is a Marzen, a radical interpretation of a Marzen or a completely different style... It doesn't succeed on any of those and was a bit of a struggle to get down... Not a welcome introduction to Rusty Rail...
