Appearance: On the dark side of the amber spectrum, essentially clear, with an ivory-hued head.

Smell: Breadcrust with a slight burnt edge to it, a bit of fruitiness with raisin and apricot, and the faintest hint of caramel.

Taste: Waterlogged toasted bread given a small, sweet kiss of caramel. Soft estery fruitiness. Near nil hop character and bitterness. Fairly clean, neutral finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: It's what you'd expect from a Scottish Ale!

From pitcher to mug in Athens, GA,

Pours is clear and both redder and lighter than usual for style.

The smokey aspect is more obvious in the nose than in tasting. Fine rich and balanced flavor with hints of toffee, dates and caramel.

O: Excellent all around, and moderately interesting, making this a great session beer.

On-tap at the brewpub - I'm told it's 5-6% ABV.

Pours a clear amber color with a half-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of toasted and caramel malts with hints of medium fruit and lighter hints of smoke.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Loads of sweet caramel malt flavors up front backed by lightly toasted malt. Midway through the sip a very small amount of nondescript fruit sweetness enters into things but fades out before an ending that's equal parts bitter and sweet.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a nice thickness with solid carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this style remains near the bottom of the list of my favorites but this was a very solid offering and one that I recommend.
