16-ounce tallboy can purchased at ABV Public House in Hillsboro, OR. Poured into an English tulip-style half-pint. Canned on 02/08/21. Brewed "in collaboration with our friends at Mr. Plywood."
Look:
Mr. Plywood has a crystal clear, pale straw colored body, capped with a finger-tall head of bright white foam that leaves plenty of lacing. And no splinters.
Smell:
Clean, doughy malt with an edge of mild sweetness. Nice floral hop character. Slightly spicy with a hint of sulfur.
Taste:
Like the nose, the flavor leads with clean, doughy malt. There's a slight underripe pear fruitiness through the middle that's quite agreeable. It doesn't last long, however, once that finishing bitterness elbows its way in. Hoo boy, that's an impressive noble bitterness. I like. The finish is crisp and drying, and the aftertaste is lingering noble hops over pleasantly grainy malt.
Feel:
Light-bodied with peppy carbonation and a drying finish. Not as soft as the best examples of the style, but still enjoyable.
Overall:
A beer called Mr. Plywood certainly offers possibilities for a review. "It's woody." "It's flat." "It's got a good frame." "It's Frank Gehry's new favorite beer."
Dad jokes aside, Mr. Plywood Pilsner from Montavilla Brew Works is a good 2nd tier NW pils. It offers some doughy malt up front, a nice grainy finish, and has plenty bitterness. Recommended. If you see it, try it.
