Lager? ...with ale yeast? Let the schizophrenia begin! A characteristic funk is applied to a robust lager platform for a light and pungent session that's as friendly as it is confused.
De Zwaard pours a pale golden color with near bright clarity. Its light creme of froth carries those classic scents of weathered woods, leather, sea air and a gentle waft of horse hair. Underneath is a grain profile with simple sweetness that's mild but of honeysuckle and wafer maltiness.
As the middle palate unfolds, a crisp and clean lager profile lies underneath the funk. Hay, grass and straw stew on the tongue as those grain sweetnesses slowly dissolve away. The remnants of husk, bread crust and a hint of savory honey remain while the taste rolls into a spicy finish of peppercorn, cumin and grassy hops.
Dry and crisp but far from clean with those earthen pungencies taking a barnyardy route in the retro-olfactory senses and after palate. Sawdust and cashew leave lasting impressions on the palate, looking beyond the taint of cork, balsa and cobweb.
