The only thing this porter was missing was not buying it by the 12 pack! Merrimack ales are killing it on the seasonals! Keep it up

These local boys have been knocking pretty much everything out of the park lately, so when I saw that they had released a new coffee stout I had to grab a four pack (along with some amazing honey chipotle chicken from the local butcher shop right down the street, natch!) to give it a shot. I've had some really, really high-quality coffee stouts recently, so I'm hoping this matches up with heavyweights from breweries like Otter Creek and Exhibit 'A'.
Pours a nearly pitch-black color with a really voluminous head of deep khaki foam that settles eventually to about a finger ring in my glass. The surface is mostly clear but there are some smoky wisps of haze that slightly occult the proceedings. Not a bad look, and I like the deep hue this one has, but overall it doesn't really stand out too much.
The nose here is wonderful, marrying intermingling scents of coffee, caramel, marshmallow, light vanilla and deep roasted malts with earthy hops and notes of frothed milk and English toffee. The intense roast going on here works perfectly with the cold-brewed coffee to bring out sensational depth and lace this with some light aspects of dark fruit and tobacco. Very well done!
On the tongue, this beer comes across silky-smooth and balanced with a heavy roast profile, chocolate malts and a soft, palate-cleansing bitterness toward the finish. Grassy and earthy hops back up the flavor toward the finish, and the coffee brings out notes of fig and ripe red raspberry in the mid-palate. Though the coffee flavor is a bit less bright than I want, I'm really loving the balance here, and the high-quality mouthfeel helps smooth everything out.
This beer comes across full-bodied with a carbonation on the lower end. I definitely get some yeast on the tongue, meaning this is unfiltered. Very happy that there's no negative impact from the yeast here, as I feel it could get in the way of the coffee in a lesser recipe. Also really like that this isn't overly dry or roasty, and that there's a lot less acid from the coffee than some lower-quality coffee stouts I've had lately. Well done once again, Merrimack Ales!
