The Tinker series consists of a base of sessionable blonde ale with rotating hop combinations used for dry-hopping. I've only had the first before this one, meaning I skipped the second. If this is any indication, however, I really missed out!
This one is dry-hopped with Simcoe and Chinook hops. I'm expecting hefty pine and moderate citrus atop the crisp and light blonde ale base. My past experiences with Tinker have differed from "session IPA" expectations mostly in how drinkable the beer is via the overall feel. Past Tinker entries have been surprisingly balanced; not hop-water like a lot of session IPAs. As such, I think there will likely be solid balance here, and surprising flavor for a 4% ale.
Pour is quite nice... a vibrant sunburst-orange color with some honeyed aspects. Head is compact but retentive; about a finger-and-a-half with spectacular tiered lace appearing as it settles. A great looking brew, to be sure!
The nose has quite a bit of pulpy grapefruit with some light rindlike notes, dank and grassy components, pine resin and light earthy spice. Very expressive for its strength, that's for sure! Light tangerine and even apricot in there as well. Damn, this just smells awesome! No off-notes or anything. Just feels super well-balanced.
On the palate, this is extremely tasty with strong flavors of orange, grapefruit peel and light stone fruit with some dank/grassy notes following through from the tongue. I'm impressed by how well-balanced this is... I get some light, smooth maltiness toward the mid-palate along with a creamy, supple carbonation. The finish of each sip seems very lightly bitter with a mostly simple and conclusive endpoint. Very drinkable... almost reminds me a little of Trillium's "Small Bird Series" beers... sessionable and definitely hoppy. Great job once again, Merrimack!
