Having loved Tinker #3, which was a dry-hopped blonde featuring Chinook and Simcoe hops, I eagerly snatched up a four-pack of this new formulation... Enigma double dry-hopped? Absolutely. Yes. Definitely.
Pours pretty much exactly like the third beer in this series; that is to say, it's a fairly hazy yet surprisingly-vibrant sunburst color with a dirty blonde sheen to it. Only a finger-and-a-half of head at its highest point, even when hard-poured, but the retention is pretty good and there are some decent little spots of lace as it dissipates and leaves behind some pretty solid legs. It's a great color with nice-looking structure to it, but I wish I got a bit more foam formation here... that would make this amazing looking!
Enigma hops are pretty weird, so I'm not sure what to really expect here. I have only really experienced them knowing I was drinking a beer featuring them when I had a can of Enigma Dry-Hopped Fort Point by Trillium. However, that is easily my favorite version of FPPA, so I have pretty high expectations here right away. I immediately am reminded of the green and sticky dankness of Mosaic along with the light spice and citrus notes of something like Columbus or Chinook. There's almost a note of earthy fennel or mushroom here... it's just super weird. I will say, however, that I've never quite smelled anything like it (not even Enigma FPPA), and I actually think it really comes together well. Slight tropical fruit underneath once this opens up and breathes, along with a little bit of candied grapefruit, red berries and tangerine rind.
On the tongue, this has a wonderful structure with a light-medium carbonation floating atop a medium-bodied beer that seems to feature oats and/or wheat for a nice graininess on the mid-palate. Strong flavors of citrus peel, lychee, red berries, lime, tangerine-like juiciness and a slightly tart element that reminds me a little of kumquats or something. Finish has a rather dull yeasty flavor with a lasting bitterness. The overall flavor profile is very fun and unusual, but the end of each sip just feels a little bit underwhelming given all the enjoyable elements brought to the table by the Enigma DDH. Where the nose was really grassy and dank, the flavor becomes a lot fruitier, which is very interesting. Definitely an enigmatic hop to experiment with, and I like how this one came out a lot. Looking forward to #5 now!
