Hidden Springs Ale Works "The Upside Down"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$5.99 @ Metro Food Mart, Ocala, FL

Notes via stream of consciousness: I hate having my wife with me when I buy beer because she makes me buy beers like this. It's a sour beer modeled after a pineapple upside down cake but I don't even know what that is. It's poured a very hazy golden-orange body beneath a thumb's width of white foam that seems to be holding well. The aroma is strong with pineapple and I can't find anything else. On to the taste... I'm mainly getting sour pineapple but there is some additional cherry-like fruitiness. It's not bitter but the acidity is more than enough to balance it and it finishes tart and dry. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp with acidity and a moderate carbonation.

Two sours in one night - what was i thinking? In my never-ending attempt to find myself a sour I would truly like, I come across this unique brew. To the eyes I found it quite beautiful and to the nose it was damn near perfect. It reminded me of 'turron' - a Cuban dessert from my youth - that it almost brought a tear to my eye. What did bring a tear was the utter sourness of beer that was tamped down by a hint of sweetness that saved the day for me. Overall, I just can't get past the truly sour taste, even though I could smell this for hours...

Pours an amber color leaning over to the darker auburn side of things. Its a muddled appearance, don't go looking for clarity here, this looks like a hazy ipa with all the shit they threw in this one. Not much head formation. Off white and 1/4".

The aroma is less sour mash wheat than it is cake ingredients upside down style. It doesn't smell bad, but what you smell isn't so much "beer". Its the sugary stuff.

Taste is much the same, this isn't much in the way of a berliner weisse, more like a candy coated wild ale. That's fine, it just lacks the wheat character. If you're into pineapple, cherry, vanilla and hazelnut (? why is that in here?) I dunno it might be your jam. Kind of reminds me of that shitty 450N creme brulee berliner weisse. Tastes nothing like a berliner weisse, but has lots of sugary kid stuff in it, which is a mild guilty pleasure I guess.

Didn't hate it, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone who likes the taste of 'beer' especially a traditional berliner weisse.

Brown in color with a fingernail of brown around two thirds of the rim. I smell lactose, cherry, vanilla, and pineapple. I’m tasting vanilla, lactose, hazelnut, and cherry. The mouth is busy, sugary and moderately carbonated.
