one of the weirdest beers we had on our costa rica trip. sort of a cider and beer hybrid, its an apple bock, literally a lager beer with apples, and it has a ton of real apple flavor to it, more than i have encountered in other beers with apple, and it also has a lot of malt to it, almost a fresh pressed apple cider, very autumnal, but insanely sweet too, i could hardly drink the whole one. big red and green apple complexion to it, just the tiniest hint of the tart skins, a lot of the sweet juicy flesh, they could have fermented this down a bit more obviously, but its also kind of cool that so much of the apple character remains in it, and if you can tolerate the sweet beers, this one is for you. there is an amber type malt base in here, and a bit of body, its also super well carbonated like some of the bright hard ciders out there, almost a champagne yeast element to it, hard to appreciate it as a lager with all this fruity sweetness lingering in the finish. thank goodness for all the bubbles. this is a weird one, i definitely couldnt session it, but its pretty clever. i was disappointed to have dropped from the fridge and broke the only bottle we found of their red ale so i never got to try it, but these guys have a pretty good reputation down there and this is both inventive and appetizing, even if only in small doses...
