Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout w/ Coconut & Hazelnut • 13.5% ABV

A dark offering from our barrel room (and our line of classic cinema villains of yore), Captain Howdy possesses beguiling aromas of coconut and hazelnut along with oodles of layers of chocolate, fudge and vanilla, all rounded out with a perfectly balanced sweetness. This is the second year using rum barrels with this recipe, adding a touch of dried fruit and spice like an Old Testament chocolate bar. Demonically good, this stout.

Keep in mind I rate beers like this lower than most people just simply because they aren't my cup of tea and I do reviews for primarily myself. So don't take this to heart.

Pours no foam. Deep oil black color that smells of chocolate dessert and booze.
Taste is potent, strong and syrupy. Chocolate and hazelnut flavoring right away, alongside oak barrel and vanilla extract.
A bit boozy but not as bad as some. Don't think I'd buy this one again but am glad I tried it once and passed it to 2 others to try as well with quite a strong reaction. Not as bad at Patrick Bateman.

Pours opaque black with a fizzy, flash in the pan tan head. Boozy bourbon, vanilla, coconut, cocoa in the nose. Coconut, rum soaked raisins, pralines, leather notes in the taste. Some espresso and milk chocolate with warmth. Full bodied mouthfeel with light carbonation. Light bitterness and lingering coconut and booziness in the finish.

A good barrel aged stout but could be drier and have a bigger hop presence.

Got this one from peensteen this past summer. Cheers!

From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Bourbon barrel aged imperial stout with coconut and hazelnut

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a two finger, very loose and foamy, fizzy light tan head with terrible retention. Head quickly fizzes down to a faint wisp and ring. Almost Coke style here. Black body with no real carbonation evident. Mostly looks flat until the finish. No real ring or lacing at all.

SMELL: Some bourbon and oak with hazelnuts for sure, some faint vanilla and coconut sweetness, with notes of milk chocolate as well.

TASTE: Hazelnuts and coconut up front, more so than in the nose, with bourbon, some woody vanilla flavors, and a decent amount of alcohol at the swallow. Bold and boozy finish of nuts, vanilla cream, coconut, hints of milk chocolate, butterscotch sweetness, with oak and some boozy bourbon lingering on the palate. Flavorful and more forthcoming than the nose.

PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Not evident from the look. A little foamy on the palate, goes down okay with a decent burn and finishes mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is alright. The flavor is okay, though it’s touch boozier than I’d like, but the head is definitely weak and the feel a little foamier than I’d like for the style. Their BALAM beats this one for sure. I've been thoroughly impressed with this brewery so far but this one falls short. Hoping the next concoction will be more impressive. Thanks again, pensteen!

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of heavy coconut notes with some sweet black chocolate and bourbon notes. Taste is also a mix of loads of coconut notes with some sweet black chocolate notes and bourbon notes with quite bit of residual sugar notes. Body is pretty full with oily texture and good carbonation with no real apparent alcohol notes. Enjoyable but coconut notes was quite heavy.
