Tommie Sjef Wild Ales

 

really special stuff here, a complex wild ale brewed with a hungarian red wine grape i had not heard of before now. its splendid stuff, deep purple in color, highly flavorful, and really one of a kind, possibly my favorite of the recent round of tommie sjef beers i was fortunate enough to be able to drink! it almost looks like stained glass, really cool color vibrancy, not a lot of head and it is a little under charged when i drink it, which really is my only critique at all of this. the nose has a lambic funk and maturity to it, lots of sweet oak, and a little of that iodine medicinal thing. not sharp though, balanced well by the fruit and the sweetness of the grapes, more flesh and juice than tangy skins to me, really pretty distinctive too, minerals and earthiness, still some grain to be appreciated in the flavor, and a nice bright acidity that makes this almost refreshing for how complex it is, pretty crazy depth here! the unique flavor of the grape makes me want to try the wine, but more than anything here, the fermentation profile has me stoked, so mature and distinctive, but fits right in with the belgian and italian grape wild ale i have come to love to much. this is really special beer, they are really on it, feeling thankful for the chance to enjoy this one!
