a real distinctive beer in a style that can run a little samey, a couple years old now, drinking quite well. not sure if all of this is barrel aged, or if i am on a special edition, i assume the former, but this is definitely barrel aged. strong whiskey character to this, almost like some of the booze is blended right in, or like the barrels werent totally drained, but it has mellowed well on the oak and over time, and this doesnt smell or taste particularly alcoholic to me at all, despite its strength. deep obsidian color to this, small tan head with a quick fade from the bottle, aroma of light oxidation, black licorice, burnt tobacco, molasses, and deeply roasted malts and black coffee. very dark on the grain spectrum and without much sweetness for balance, in fact, most of the sugar character i get seems to be from the bourbon itself, lightly corny, vanilla forward, and mellow through the whole drink. good balance though, quite a lot of the whiskey on it, smooth in texture, and just a little twangy as it warms, rich without being sweet, mature without being tired, and just very well made overall. there is a spiciness to this fundamentally, like there is some rye malt in the mash, and there is a neat drying yeast element towards the end often absent in these, not at all heavy for what it is, really pretty dynamic stuff. i would have loved to try it fresh, but it was a nice sipper a couple of years old too. my first from these guys, nice!

Looks = Dark brown opaque, light lacing that sticks to the glass.
Smell = Roasted Malts, dark coffee
Taste = Dark chocolate flavors, with a light coppery taste. Malty
flavors and dark coffee notes come through
Feel = Light mouth feel. Sits on the palette well and lingers for a few moments after.
Overall = Fantastic Beer taste even better close to the source.
