been ages since i had or saw anything from these guys, even heard about them, they were hot stuff for a minute there, this i think is the first one i have seen in idaho, on tap too, way cool. the dunkelweizen is not a style that usually is used as a base for wild beer, so kind of a little something different here, a very sour one done with plum, cool its so low alcohol, and i like the dark wheat base, good body and depth to support all the acid and also really unique with the plums, too sour to drink a lot of, but this is clever stuff. not real heady from the tap, chocolate brown with red edges, some froth can be roused with a twirl. the nose is bacterial and mature, i get some red wine character and woodiness, a dry cocoa note, some roasty earthy grain, dark bread, definitely wheat, less german on the yeast side obviously with all the pucker, but some neat funk in there too keeping the ferment dynamic, the plum goes a little port wine to me, blackberry, tart as well. the flavor is all of this, some light anise or licorice spice as it warms, jelly sweetness up front from the fruit, more intense tannic and sour properties later, this has to have seen some oak i think. subtle cola or dr pepper, a baked layer, and some creamy feeling body even with the acid. really flavorful, i love the plums with the dark wheat. more carbonation would help, and a toned down sourness would make this pretty drinkable, still really good, i hope this is a sign of more to come from these guys in this market!
