Departed Soles Brewing Co. "Red Headed Step Brewer"
on tap at the brewery, 1 April 2016
Notes: 5.8% ABV. Clear mahogany brown body beneath a creamy head of khaki. Average retention with spotty lacing. Limited malty and toasty aroma. The flavor follows but it's fuller, including floral and grassy hops, some medium caramel, and a subtle hint of roasty, chocolatey grain (it reminded me of Crisp chocolate malt). It's balanced by a moderate bitterness; and it's medium-light in body and smooth across the palate, accentuating its malt components. Toasty and caramelish with a drop or two of burnt sugar lingering in the mainly dry finish. Really nice! I wasn't expecting too much based on the aroma but the flavor really delivers. Massively drinkable. It's listed as a red ale, but I also feel like there's a little bit of a Scottish ale to it in that it's malty with underlying notes of chocolate and roast. Worth checking out.

A decent red. Not the best I have had, but not the worst. It just doesn't have super assertive flavors. Very drinkable. I found out later that their beers are gluten free, which is nice if you have an issue with gluten. I don't, so it's not really a selling point for me.
