Name: Ol' Sampson
Brewery: Barbarian Brewing
Location: Garden City, ID
Style: Barrel-Aged Barleywine
ABV: 11.8%
Canned: 2018
Date: 15 May 2025.
I am serving the beer at 50 degrees in a tulip glass. The pour created a two-fingered, light tan head with poor retention. The quick dissipation left some lacing on the glass. The color is dark amber with dark mahogany hues. It is opaque and charting at SRM 22. Overall, it has an average appearance for a barleywine.
Nosing the glass, I smell oak, whiskey, char, toasted malts, treacle, light dates, toffee, caramel, light toasted bread crust, floral esters, earthiness, and a light malty sweetness.
Sipping the glass, I taste oak, whiskey, treacle, dates, toffee, caramel, leather, herbal, char, dried orange peel, light pine resin, earthiness, and malty sweetness.
The mouthfeel is slightly astringent and coating, finishing warm. The body is medium-plus and has medium-low carbonation.
I am split on this beer. I want to enjoy it, but I do not. I expected a bit more sweetness from the malt and a subtle hop profile for an English Barleywine. The balance and harmony are struggling, too. Ol' Sampson is the fourth beer from this brewery. The beer runs in the middle of the pack. It is not the best Barleywine, but it is not terrible.

Bottle share on 7/30/16. Definitely taking after the English style, as it seemed much softer and sweeter than the normal American BW. I'd like to come at this one again, now knowing what it is. The initial shock left me with some prejudices, but I think in the right circumstances this might be much better.
