Barrel-Aged Blueberry Cheesecake
Barbarian Brewing
Date: 2020
The beer is a little over a year old; my last beer from the brewery was a sad disappointment. The beer blew up when I popped the top, with plenty of carbonation. I poured into a tulip; the temperature was 48 degrees. An airy and frothy two-fingered light purple head was created. The dissipation was quick and left nothing on the glass. The color is dark purple, unusual for a stout. I had to check twice to make sure I got a stout and not a fruit beer. Everything about the appearance is sideways.
Blueberry cheesecake just smacks you in the nose. Next, I detect roasted malts, fruity sweetness, lactose, graham crackers, and bubble gum. I am so confused; there is nothing in the nose that tells me this is a stout. I was looking for dark roasted malts, caramels, toffee, something, give me something.
The beer tastes more like a sour ale, not a stout. The flavors of blueberries, bubblegum, graham crackers, bready, tart, graham crackers, and floral.
The mouthfeel is astringent, tart, and sweet. The body is medium-light, and the finish ravels apart.
Digging deeper into this beer, It is a golden stout. The beer held up well considering; the style of the beer. An absolute disaster in a glass. I am highly concerned the other Barbarian beers I bought are no-good. So far, they are the only beers out of hundreds that did not hold up from the cellar; furthermore, my oldest beer was in 2014, and its friend was tasty.

500ml capped bottle, BA Blueberry Cheesecake, described as a "golden" stout made with NY Cheese Cake and blueberries, vanilla, lactose, and and orange peel, aged in Woodford barrels 6 months. Opaque purple pour, fizzy head; huge blueberry nose, sweet and tart; tons of vanilla and creamy milk sugars; NY Cheesecake for sure; faint bourbon heat; caramel; very rich, full-bodied. A pleasant dessert sipper, pretty gimmicky BUT well-executed.
