this is super clever, a sour ale designed to mimic the infamous cocktail, and man do they come mighty close. this is done with sauvignon blanc, grapefruit, and lime juice, so it really hits on the tangy tannic tart citrus element of a good sour mix base, but it also is served on nitro, which creams it up when its first poured and it sort of serves for the egg white aspect of the cocktail in terms of texture, brilliant planning and pretty solid execution. this is pale and sort of nondescript from the tap, fizzy for a nitro beer, and it doesnt hold the head too long, maybe the acidity breaks it down some, but it stays feeling sort of creamy and spritzy at the same time, which suits these flavors so well. i get the lime first in terms of the fruit in here, the sharpness of the grapefruit and some bitterness in a pithy way from it too, the wine element is smart, adds a little delicate aspect here, some mild sweetness, and a real springtime freshness. it is quite sour, and while the lactic pucker is clean and tidy and actually brings a lemon note to the already robust citrus side of this, its a little more intense than it needs to be, and really limits drinkability, even though its not harsh or vinegar-like or anything. the flavors here though are just awesome, and the nitro is killer for it while it lasts. its nice for the coming warm weather, and fits in nicely with their range of ambitious sour brews. one of the best sours in recent memory for barbarian!
