Snifter at brewery. Black pour with a few bubbles. Aroma leads with some orange peel, sweet. Taste brings the pistachios, notes of orange and a base layer of toasty malts. Quite tasty.

one of the weirder and cooler barbarian beers to date, which is saying a lot because their whole identity is making strange beers out of unconventional ingredients. this is a a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout with oranges and pistachio flour, wildly interesting and truly peculiar, but also really good. some in our group thought the orange element was too dominant, but not me, i think the proportions are cool the orange pulls deep dark chocolate out of the malt profile and contributes needed acidity and bitterness against the sugary rich bourbon and concentrated middle malt, its rich beer but the orange keeps it from being too heavy, even for the style, i think its right on. near black in color, nice shine, short head but enough carbonation, full bodied but not stupidly viscous, and i like how forward the bourbon is too, almost a cocktail vibe with the natural orange, vanilla all through this, and its sort of in that flavor vein where the pistachio makes itself known, to me its not obviously flour, almost has a melted ice cream vibe, true to the nut and sort of drying even though its a little oily, neat mix of flavors and textures from it, slight salt, slight umami, great with the hint of smoke in the roasted barley and the coffee note there too. the alcohol is kind of hot and it enhances all the flavors, it makes the bourbon pop through the dark malt, and i dont mind its presence in a slow beer like this. rich chocolate, heaps of essential orange, enough whiskey, and a pleasing nutty finish, really complex and good, even if it stays with me on the palate just a little too long. sometimes these crazy beers they do come across like gimmicks, the kind of thing fun to taste and debate but never order again, this is not that, its unique and regal and definitely something id love to drink on again, especially around holiday time. killer!

Imperial stout aged in Woodford (B)ourbon barrels with (o)ranges and (p)istachios added.

On-tap at the downtown taphouse - Oily and densely opaque pour.

Aromas lead with orange vanilla, and I'm immediately impressed - rich aromas of orange liqueur and bourbon with a nice nutty presence.

Wow this is incredibly unique and well-integrated...orange, bourbon, orange liqueur, orange chocolate, pistachios...rich, warm, caramel...slick, thick body.

Really good stuff.
