neat idea for a recipe, not sure i have seen many oud bruin types aged in rum barrels, and the addition of blackberries gives it another layer, really pretty interesting stuff, exceedingly sour and a small doses thing for me, even with the cooked sugar richness the rum gives it, clever beer though, and nicely executed. they say its a spontaneously fermented base, but their spon stuff always leans so acidic, not sure why, but its a little bit to its detriment most of the time, even here, where the base style permits some acetic character. darker in the glass from the tap than a lot of these, pushing through brown to almost black with some saturated purple at the edges from the fruit addition, some haze, very little head. the aroma on this is tart, roasty, oak forward, with hints of vanilla and honey, and the fruit has a tang too, a baked intensity, and really goes great with this grain base, mature and interesting, slightly funky, real complex. light smoke in the flavor, raisin, and coffee, nice malt depth to this, not sweet from the grain, only from the rum, no double jeopardy, but some molasses and fig from it, a light vanilla layer too. the fruit is pretty potent, as is the acidity from the ferment, so this drinks real bold, but its surely cohesive and the darker malt adds a lot, i like the bitterness for balance, and the way the oak is woven through it. it has a fuller medium body even with the sourness, its light on carbonation, and it warms up very well. cant drink a ton of this, but its an interesting take on the style, fruit and barrel make it for me, not sure how wonderful this base oud bruin would be without those elements, but they bring it together well. unique offering, im into it.

Taster at Barbarian. Purple pour, spotty head. Fruity aroma, grapes, dusty. Taste comes in super tart, dry feel, all over grape-y vibe. Mild pucker, slick feel.

On-tap at the brewery; darker brownish/reddish color with no head. Tart and funky nose and palate with jammy notes or blackberry, barnyard funk, and lemony tartness. The spirit barrel comes through with some of that rum character. Decent Bruin but not my favorite.
