Taster at Barbarian. Hazy amber pour, ring of fine head, some lacing. Tropical fruity aroma takes a downturn at the taste. A muddy mess. Not sure what they were going for.

weird one, cannot be correctly listed as american ipa, to me its obviously a belgian type ipa, done with fresh hops, a strange and ambitious beer, not sure i love it, the yeast is over the top, runs away with this, fully phenolic, if this isnt belgian yeast, the ferment is whack, and if this fruitiness i perceive as being from it is from the hops, than these are some weird fresh hops, i thought citra or mosaic or something, has to be belgian yeast, but the hop side is cool, i like all the malt in it and the higher abv this time of year, uncommon to say the least. a small doses thing by virtue of its intensity of flavor not of its strength. slightly reddish or copper, decent clarity, short white head but good retention. nose and taste are the same, heavy esters from the yeast, banana, lemon wood polish, and green grape, bitter grapefruit, and wet grass freshness which adds a lot to this. im not sure where this would stand for me without the fresh hops, as a belgian its probably fermented too warm, its a bit sharp, spicy, and stressed to me. the freshness is nice, the hops are well dosed, and with the yeast intensity i am glad this is a double, all the hops are necessary, and the grain support is nice. overall a unique beer, not expertly planned or refined by any means, but different enough to be cool, and i havent seen anyone else do fresh hopped belgian beer this year, so thats cool. always some fun stuff on tap in their locations!
