1L howler from Sherbrooke Liquor store - not a lot of info out there about what kind of barrel, etc, etc was used, so Imma just gonna have to wing it.
This beer pours a clear, pale golden amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly dirty white head, which leaves some boiling cauldron profile lace around the glass as it quickly wafts off.
It smells of sour oranges, underripe grapefruit, grainy and bready cereal malt, vanilla-forward barrel staves, faint earthy yeast, and some ethereal leafy, hay-like, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, some muddled tart citrus juiciness, rye whisky sans the heat, a somewhat estery yeastiness, some damp minerality, and more understated earthy, musty, and herbal hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-satiating frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and generally smooth, with nothing really getting in the way of a swell time at this particular juncture. It finishes trending dry, the sour barrel character predominating.
Overall - this comes off a lot better than I was expecting (sorry for the backhanded compliment), in that the barrel flavour is apparent, but doesn't overwhelm the sour citrus essences. It's easy enough to throw back, and probably won't make me want to have a nap afterwards.
